Nationalism is the sentiment of unity among a set of people occupying a territory. Nationalism has another meaning "pure patriotism ". A person who believes in nationalism, obviously there is no doubt, he is a pure lover of the country. Nationalism defenses in many sectors such as economics, culture, religion, language, and administration. Nationalism has great influence on making a strong nation. 

  

On the other hand, nationalism has caused violence in different nations and countries. For instance, in 1947 when riots had begun, many Muslims and Hindus had died only for their nationalism. The main reason for the riots was Hindus and Muslims had different nationality. Hindus believed in their Hindu nationalism and Muslims vice versa. For the nationalism, approximately, 5 lakh people were killed before partition. We know that in "shadow lines" when the partition was beginning, Dutta  Chowdhury and Thamma's family left Dhaka but their hearts were stuck to their birthplaces.

                        Plot Summary : The Shadow Lines

The young middle-class boy protagonist, or the narrator had a turnaround of the family through the events of the novel. The novel has an influence on Dutta Chaudhari and prices family in London. In the novel, Tridib is the second protagonist who is the uncle of the narrator. The narrator mostly likes his uncle Tridib, because he is endowed with enormous general knowledge. He has also peculiar attitudes to events and place. On the other hand, narrator's grandmother is punctual, very strict and disciplined. Thamma or the grandma of the narrator is found to be one of the major characters in the novel. She did not like Tridib's behavior as Tridib had no concern about his life. He is an exceptional and extraordinary boy who mostly likes gossiping and "adda" with people.

Eventually, Tridib is taken with May Price. In the communal uprising of 1964 in Dhaka, Tridib endangers his life to save May from the potential threats of the mob attacking them. On the contrary, the narrator also falls in love with his cousin Illa. She is a beautiful and intelligent girl who likes to lead an independent life. The narrator hardly expresses his feelings towards Illa. When Thamma came to know that her grandson falls in love with Illa she did not like it. The narrator's grandmother most of the times alerts him about Illa, she thought that Illa was a naughty girl.   

  

The novel depicts life span of the three generation of the narrator's family who lived in Dhaka, Calcutta, and London. Here, the writer, Amitav Gosh describes the events of swadeshi movements, communal riots and world war 11. When the British colonizers oppressed the people of the Indian subcontinent, the people demanded their freedom from the colony.  

To conclude, this novel depicts a broad picture of an Indian Bengali family.
